The city has approximately 250,000 residents.〔(Grundfos Egypt )〕 It has also a number of hotels including Movenpick.〔(Movenpick Hotel Obour City )〕 It is named as such to honor the crossing of Bar Lev line by the army of Egypt in the Yom Kippur War in 1973. It is one of the new 16 urban areas in Greater Cairo (among New Cairo, 6th of October City and others).
